San Diego North County Means Business
Technology companies dominate the list of largest private sector employers in the region led by wireless communications leader Qualcomm with more than 13,000 employees in the region. Technology and defense companies General Atomics, Northrop Grumman Corp., SAIC and UTC Aerospace Systems – Aerostructures together employ another 20,000 people in an industry that has deep connections to the military and also employs thousands more people in smaller companies.
More than 65, 000 people work for the State, County or City of San Diego. Another 47,000 people work in universities, colleges and community colleges. The University of California San Diego alone employs 28,000 people not including those who work in their healthcare system.
Healthcare providers are also among the largest employers in the region, employing approximately 47,000 people. Sharp Healthcare, Scripps Health, Kaiser Permanente, UC San Diego Health System, Rady Children’s Hospital and the Veteran’s Affairs San Diego Healthcare System all rank in the top 25 employers. In addition to the healthcare professionals themselves, these jobs include administrative support, facilities support, marketing and communications, and fundraising.
Jobs in the tourism sector round out the list of largest employers. Employment at attractions such as SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park fluctuates between 4,000 and 6,000 people due to seasonal employment. Indian gaming employs more than 10,000 people at the larger casinos and resorts.
The majority of San Diego's Top 25 Employers are located closer to Carlsbad's airport than San Diego.
